Ian Pickering

Ian an commenced a career as an ambulance officer with St John Ambulance Service in Auckland, New Zealand in 1965.

In 1976, following various promotions within the service, Ian was appointed General Manager/Chief Ambulance Officer of the St John Ambulance (Auckland centre) Trust Board, and in 1986 was appointed as National Director of Ambulance Services for the Order of St John in New Zealand in addition to his other positions.

Ian was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the South Australian Ambulance Service from 1992-2002. He is currently Executive Officer of the Convention of Ambulance Authorities Inc., the peak body representing emergency ambulance services in Australia and New Zealand.

Ian was a Winston Churchill Fellow in (1975), receiving a scholarship to study at the UCLA Paramedic Academy (Los Angeles), which was followed by a tour of duty with the County of Los Angeles Fire Department and the Brighton (UK) Ambulance Service. The subsequent report was instrumental in the establishment of paramedic services in New Zealand.

Ian also has affiliations with the following groups, committees and organizations:

  • Chairman of the South Australian Ambulance Service Board (1994-1998). After resigning the Chairmanship, Ian continued as member of the Board serving on the Finance & Audit Committee, the Ambulance Service Education Board and the Medical Advisory Committee to 2002
  • State Controller - Ambulance & First Aid, State Disaster Committee (1992-2002)
  • Delegate, Convention of Ambulance Authorities (1978-2001) Chair Education Sub-committee
    Chairman of the SA State Rescue Helicopter Management Committee (1995-2002)
  • Member, South Australian Trauma Clinical Advisory Committee (1997-2002)
  • Member, South Australian Government Radio Network Ministerial Steering Group (1998-2002)
  • Member, State Committee of the Australian Quality Council (1999 - 2002)
