Janette is a science graduate who subsequently trained
as a nurse. After a period working within the Health Service
in the areas of emergency surgery, Accident & Emergency
and Coronary Care she began a research career at the Nursing
Practice Research Unit, University of Surrey.
In 1991 she moved to the Medical Care Research Unit at
the University of Sheffield. The unit conducts policy research
for the Department of Health and Janette has been involved
in the development of the Emergency Care Research Programme
and, latterly, has headed the associated Pre-hospital Care
research Programme. Completed projects include evaluations
of a regional trauma system, the impact of introducing paramedics
into the ambulance service on outcomes following major trauma
and a clinical trial of pre-hospital IV fluid therapy. She
is also closely involved in the development of Emergency
Medical Dispatch Systems and the relationship with call
categorisation and performance measurement for ambulance
services and has competed work on the safety and reliability
of these systems.
Current projects include a large evaluation examining the
effects of changing ambulance service response time performance
standards, a clinical trial examining the use of NHS Direct
nurse assessment for the management of low priority 999
calls and the role of community first response schemes.
Janette is also Course Director of a Masters programme in
Health Services Research & Technology Assessment.
