Dr. Tony Williams grew up in Wales and
began his working career as a musician. He then became a
teacher of music and physical education before going to
the United States to complete Bachelor and Master of Science
degrees at the University of Oregon. Moving to Canada, Tony
taught in the college system in Alberta.
After a brief stint studying medicine at
the University of Calgary, Tony went on to teach paramedics
at the Southern Institute of Technology. Soon after arriving
in British Columbia he became the founding director of the
Paramedic Academy at the Justice Institute. He occupied
this role for over 20 years, nurturing the Academy into
becoming a world-renowned centre for EMS training and development.
Tony has also received many awards for his work in EMS,
including recognition from the Chinese Association of Emergency
Medicine, and the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine.
In 1993 Tony earned his PhD in Health and
Human Services, specializing in the maintenance of competence
in health professions. Dr.Williams has worked throughout
Asia and the Middle East developing Emergency Medical Services
and Professional Competency programs in the Justice and
Public Safety sectors.
In July of 2002, Dr. Williams left the
Institute on a three-year secondment as visiting professor
to Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC. As part of his
role there, Tony is involved with the graduate school of
Organizational Leadership and Learning, where he provides
academic leadership to the MA degrees in leadership for
the health care and justice and public safety sectors. In
addition to his teaching duties he supervises Master's theses
and conducts research on leadership related to health and
human services. His current research interest is in dispersed
leadership during exceptional incidents.
