Graeme McColl

Graeme is currently the Emergency Management Coordinator employed by the St John Ambulance Service in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Under contract with the New Zealand Ministry of Health, Graeme is responsible for major incident planning and health response coordination throughout the South Island, which involves close involvement with all health providers in the area of emergency planning and response.

Graeme is a member of a health sector advisory group, advising the Ministry on action planning for emerging infectious diseases. As facilitator for the Canterbury West Coast region Emergency Care Coordinating Team, Graeme currently advises on the delivery of emergency care from roadside to bedside. In addition to this Graeme is also the liaison contact for a 24hour free telephone health advice service in the South Island.

Prior to this position Graeme was a member of the New Zealand Police Force for 28 years, achieving rank of Superintendent. His police career involved wide experience in operational planning, management and officer in command of emergency incidents. He has been on the directing staff of the Royal New Zealand Police College, the Australian Federal Police College and the Australian Police Staff College (now Australian Institute of Police Management) lecturing Senior Courses on operational planning and command. Graeme is still actively involved in incident management training and facilitating exercises for health professionals on incident response coordination.

Graeme retired from the police in 1996 to take up his present position. After attending the Australian Disaster Medicine course at Mt Macedon, Graeme developed an interest in the management of CBR (Chemical Biolological Radiation) incidents, consequently producing a planning guide for hospitals and providing input into a national antidote stocks database.

He is also a member and advisor to several emergency service planning groups throughout the South Island.
