Mark joined the Ambulance Service in 1985 as an Ambulance
Cadet and has since worked as Paramedic, Station Shift Manager,
National Service Frameworks Lead and more recently as Operations
Manager all within a busy UK Ambulance Service serving a
population of 1.3 million.
During Mark's career he undertook the first Paramedic Studies
Degree course at the University of Sheffield and has since
also completed a Masters degree in Health Services Research
at ScHARR, University of Sheffield. He has also undertaken
the Silver and Gold Command course for the tactical and
strategic management of Chemical, Biological, Radioactive
and Nuclear incidents, and has an interest in disaster and
emergency medicine.
Mark joined the ASA in November 2002 and is already beginning
to shape the future of Ambulance Service Clinical Effectiveness,
with the emphasis based upon use of best available evidence
to deliver high quality and clinically effective patient
focused care. He has published papers and presented internationally
at the International Conference of Evidence Based Health
Care (Sicily) and at the World Stroke Congress (Vancouver).
The role involves working in close partnership with the
Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee (JRCALC),
and the Department of Health (Prime Minister's Delivery
Unit). Mark is keen to ensure that his role is as dynamic
as possible and works in conjunction with all member services,
NICE, MINAP and the Healthcare Commission to ensure that
ambulance services are at the forefront of patient care.
As well as Mark's skills and interests in operational and
clinical management of ambulance services, his particular
areas of interest are pre-hospital research, evidence based
medicine and reforming emergency care. Mark is a steering
group member of the Cochrane Prehospital and Emergency Health
field, a founder member of the Royal College of Surgeons
of Edinburgh's Faculty of Prehospital Care and also a member
of the RCSEd Training and Standards Board.
The ASA has evolved from what was formerly the Chief Ambulance
Officer's Association and now acts as the employers association
and 'the voice of the public sector ambulance services'.
The ASA provides advice and guidance to all stakeholders
including national government.
As National Clinical Effectiveness Manager, Mark is directly
responsible to the ASA Chief Executive and attends and reports
to the ASA Board.
