  • Qualified, Leeds 1972, accredited in Accident and Emergency Medicine 1979.
  • Consultant A&E Medicine at Pinderfield Hospital, Wakefield, 1979-1992.
  • Subsequently Medical Director to the Scottish Ambulance Service, a Special Health Board of the NHS in Scotland, Europe's largest and busiest ambulance service, serving a population of 5 million within a predominantly rural landmass.
  • Former Chairman of Resuscitation Council, UK.
  • Member of Board in Immediate Care of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
  • Member of Board of World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine.
  • Interests include First Aid, emergency medical care and Resuscitation, hand surgery, Rural Medicine, air ambulance service provision and transport medicine, major incident and mass casualty management, medical education.
  • Published over 50 papers and author or contributor to 9 textbooks including "First Aid" and "Accident and Emergency Medicine".
  • Current research interests include prehospital thrombolysis for acute myocardial infarction.
